The Significance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Becoming a CTP is the start of an ongoing process of learning and development. Retention of CTP status requires completion of a minimum level of recognised CPD activity across each three-year period following the initial granting of CTP status. This is to maintain the currency of your accreditation as a CTP, through taking up learning and development opportunities and maintaining an active involvement in your profession and its networks.

The requirement is that you achieve at least 120 points from the available ‘menu’ of CPD activities over three years. The actual hours that you put into securing these points will depend on the particular mix of activities that you choose.

It is best that you plan for your CPD activities over the course of the three-year period, and do not leave it too late to meet the requirements. Otherwise you may forego particular CPD opportunities that would be of most benefit to your job, and career in general.

The organisation that you first nominated to undertake assessment of your eligibility – your professional association or the Transport and Logistics Centre (TALC) – will also undertake the review of your CPD activity. This assessing organisation will provide you with specific guidance on its requirements for CPD, and will provide a point of contact during the three-year period on any CPD matter.

The cost of the three-yearly review of CPD is $A110 (including GST), payable to your nominated assessing organisation.

If evidence of CPD activity is not submitted, and the fee not paid, the accreditation as CTP will lapse and the post nominals CTP can no longer be used.

What are Recognised CPD Activities?

In setting their CPD requirements, each of the participating professional associations and TALC operates within a broad framework set down by the Transport and Logistics Certification Council as to what constitutes a CPD activity, and the weighting of that activity.

The following activities are covered within the Council’s CPD framework:

1. Formal study, including short courses

2. Informal learning, eg through ‘on the job’ opportunities

3. Informal private study, tours or site visits, professional exchanges

4. Attendance at association or industry events, such as Conferences, briefings, dinner meetings with guest speaker, seminars and workshops

5. Presentations at Conferences, seminars or workshops, and/or publication of papers and reports

6. Participation in association committee work related to professional development and standards

7. Other special events or activities eg receipt of industry or association awards

Weightings will vary across specific activities, eg participation in a Conference or seminar as a guest speaker or presenter will rate more highly than attendance alone. More detail on the framework can be found under CPD Requirements.

Each professional association uses the Council’s framework to provide advice to their CTP holders as to the type of CPD activities that they encourage, and the related weightings. For example, an association may also identify participation in a mentoring programme as an activity open to a CTP, and the weighting that would accrue as mentor or mentee.

The Transport and Logistics Certification Council will be further developing the CPD elements of the CTP programme and results will be made available through member organisations as well as this website.
